EMDR Therapy and Counselling are services offered by Paul Carter, who is currently working with clients online and over the phone.
Paul Carter has worked as a counsellor/psychotherapist since 2003. He works with short-term clients using EMDR for PTSD, trauma and abuse, or CBT and solution focused models for other issues. The aim here is to help clients to learn strategies and solutions for coping with their difficulties.
He also works with gestalt and the person centred models. These models are more relational working in the “here and now” of what is going on relationally between the client and counsellor. These models are more suited to longer term work to assist clients to find their way through the difficulties they are experiencing.
What is Counselling?
Counselling is getting assistance from a professional such as Paul, to explore personal, social or psychological difficulties in confidence. A Counselling Session lasts for 50 minutes. It is quite normal to feel nervous or anxious at the first session. Paul will introduce himself and ask you some questions in order to find out more information about your reason for coming for counselling and get an idea of what you want to achieve.
How long you will come to counselling will depend on the nature of your difficulty. It also depends on your commitment to change. People change at different rates and there are no right or wrong time periods as some people adapt to change more quickly or slowly than others. Making changes in your life is not always easy and is the reason that you are experiencing difficulties. Paul works with a wide range of issues you can find out more here Counselling Services. Paul also offers Relationship Counselling. You can find out more about Couples Counselling here.
What is EMDR?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing it is a psychotherapy treatment that was originally designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories, is often used to help alleviate depression, anxiety, and help clients recover from physical, emotional and sexual abuse and domestic violence. It is also helpful for clients struggling with grief.
EMDR is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The number of sessions of EMDR you might need can vary. For some it might be only one or two sessions and for others it may be more. You can discuss this with your therapist when you make contact. EMDR Sessions are 60 minutes long. It is possible to have sessions that are longer.
If you are struggling with Trauma, Abuse, bullying, depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Witnessed or experienced something traumatic such as a car accident or violent crime or suddenly lost a love one, then EMDR may be able to help you.
When a person experiences something traumatic, often they may feel overwhelmed. When our brain’s are overwhelmed by our circumstances they don’t fully process what is going on. This can mean that the memory of an event may get “stuck” in a person’s mind this memory can stay very vivid and intense. The person feels like they are reliving the experience and the distress they felt at the time, over and over again. It’s like a person has become stuck reading the same page in book over and over and they aren’t able to turn the page.
EMDR helps the person to turn the page, unstick the memory and reprocess what happened so it isn’t as intense. It also helps the person to reduce the emotional impact of the memory, so that when they do think about it the feelings are not as intense and strong.

EMDR is also a recognised IAPT Treatment and is recommended by the NHS for clients with PTSD or who have experienced trauma. It is also recommended and used by the Ministry of Defence to help service personnel with PTSD.
