Trans awareness for therapists

Trans awareness for therapists part one

Would you like to feel more confident and competent to work with trans and gender diverse clients? Workers can at times feel out of their depth with this topic or even unaware of how their unconscious biases may be harming trans clients. This course helps delegates get things right when trans clients cross their path.

This half day helps delegates both learn about trans people and unlearn things that may be getting in the way of supportive relationships.

From their lengthy experience working with trans and gender diverse people in a number of settings, Sam looks at not just the stereotypical trans story that we may be familiar with, but at the diversity of trans experiences and those that intersect with them.

The training covers:

  • What is sex, what is gender, and what is gender identity?
  • Culturally competent language and approaches to working with gender diversity
  • A brief understanding of trans history and global gender diversity
  • Debunking myths and stereotypes
  • Tips on best practice
  • An overview of what the research tells us

Note this course will instil basic competencies for supporting trans people around the general issues delegates are trained to work with.

Trans awareness for therapists part two

Developing on the content in part one, this half day helps delegates reinforce and enhance best practice approaches to working with trans people, as well as looking specifically at trans mental health, the research, impacts and an understanding of the minority stress model.

On completion of the two courses, delegates should feel more competent to let clients know they are a safe pair of hands to work with trans clients in the therapist/workers’s specialist area.

You do not have to have done part one to enrol.

The training covers:

  • Mental health, trans people and the minority stress model
  • What trans clients feed back about helpful and unhelpful interventions
  • Examining the core elements of transphobia and cissexism
  • Understanding the current cultural context
  • What is affirmative practice? Myths and facts
  • Neurodiversity and trans people: understanding the overlap
