Counselling in the West Midlands – Paul Carter is a therapist working online and in person in the West Midlands. Paul specializes in working with trauma using EMDR. He is also a couples counsellor and Clinical Supervisor. Whatever you are struggling with there are different ways that Paul can support you and that you can work with Paul.
Psychotherapy and Counselling
Paul has worked as a counsellor/psychotherapist since 2003. He works with short-term clients using EMDR for PTSD, trauma and abuse, or CBT and solution focused models for other issues. The aim here is to help clients to learn strategies and solutions for coping with their difficulties.
He also works with gestalt and the person centred models. These models are more relational working in the “here and now” of what is going on relationally between the client and myself. These models are more suited to longer term work to assist clients to find their way through the difficulties they are experiencing. He also works with body, thoughts, feelings & emotions using Developmental Somatic Therapy.
Working in an integrated way, means that Paul can use any of the above models to support the client in the work that needs to be done.

EMDR
If you are struggling with Trauma, Abuse, bullying, depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Witnessed or experienced something traumatic such as a car accident or violent crime or suddenly lost a love one, then EMDR may be able to help you.
When a person experiences something traumatic, often they may feel overwhelmed. When our brains are overwhelmed by our circumstances they don’t fully process what is going on. This can mean that the memory of an event may get “stuck” in a person’s mind, this memory can stay very vivid and intense. The person feels like they are reliving the experience and the distress they felt at the time, over and over again. It’s like a person has become stuck reading the same page in a book over and over and they aren’t able to turn the page.
EMDR helps the person to turn the page, unstick the memory and reprocess what happened so it isn’t as intense. It also helps the person to reduce the emotional impact of the memory, so that when they do think about it the feelings are not as intense and strong.
For more information about EMDR and how it works please have a look at my blog here. Alternatively, you can find out more about this method of Therapy by visiting this NHS page: www.nhs.uk/conditions/ptsd/treatment/
