National Suicide Awareness Day 10 September

National Suicide Awareness Day is on 10 September. It is an opportunity for communities and organisations to raise awareness of how we can support people so that fewer people die by suicide. The theme for this year’s suicide awareness day is “Creating Hope Through Action”.

“Creating Hope Through Action” is the triennial theme for the World Suicide Prevention Day from 2021-2023. This theme serves as a powerful call to action and reminder that there is an alternative to suicide and that through our actions we can encourage hope and strengthen prevention.

The Office for National Statistics collects information on suicides in the UK. According to them in 2021 there were 5219 suicides registered, this I an increase of 307 from 2020. According to the Samaritans, the latest suicides statistics showed that in 2018, in the UK and Republic of Ireland, more than 6,800 people died by suicide.

Talking about suicide and talking to someone who is feeling suicidal can be very difficult and distressing, it is as important that you get appropriate support as the person who is expressing suicidal ideation.

The Samaritans have a great deal of useful information on their website about how to support someone who is feeling suicidal. They are a great resource please visit their website for more information.

This is also a pdf of little tips that the Samaritans have put together that you might find useful.
