Spring Cleaning – Boost your mental health – Spring is here! It is the time of year when the weather starts to improve and we start to come out of the hibernation or winter. Often at this time of the year we think about spring cleaning and tidying up. Evidence suggests that having a clean and tidy environment helps us to feel better and when we engage in cleaning and tidying it helps us to manage how we feel.
So, if you are struggling with anxiety or depression, regulating your emotions or just generally feeling out of sorts it might be a good time to look at your environment and consider tidying up. Whether this is at home or work.

Here are 3 Tips for getting you started on your spring cleaning and tidying
- Start small – choose a room, a draw, a cupboard, the boot of your car. Focus on that area until it is done and then move on to a new area. Keep things small and manageable, don’t attempt to do more than is realistic. If in doubt do less than you think you can do.
- Start a daily routine of doing 2 or 3 things to keep your area tidy and clean. For instance every day: Wash and dry up at the end of the day and put things away and spend 10 minutes going through your home putting things away, wiping surfaces, putting on a load of washing, emptying bins etc.
- Once a week choose one larger job to do, for instance clean your windows, wash your car, dust a room, go around with a feather duster. Declutter for 20 minutes.
