Personality Disorders

There are a number of personality disorders. A personality disorder is a set of criteria that affect the personality style of an individual. An individual does not need to meet all of the criteria, but does need to meet the majority of them and they need to present them self in a pervasive way.

When a counsellor is working with someone who has a personality disorder it is important for the counsellor to bear in mind that the individual does not become their diagnosis. The diagnosis however does help to create a map for the counsellor in that they can expect certain behaviours to present themselves during the period the client is in counselling.

These behaviours may include low mood or depression, anxiety, mood swings, risky behaviours, isolation, no friends, fear of being humiliated, or believing that they have superpowers. These are just a few of the behaviours individuals may present with.
