Living with HIV

Living with HIV and Mental Health Support

Living with HIV can be difficult, AIDS/HIV has been a huge taboo for a long time. People living with this have been discriminated against, experienced unacceptable prejudice and intimidation.

What is HIV?

HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. ‘Immunodeficiency’ refers to the weakening of the immune system by the virus.

HIV has been passed on between humans for many decades but was only identified in the early 80s.

What is AIDS?

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is a collection of illnesses (‘syndrome’) caused by a virus people pick up (‘acquire’) that makes their immune system weak (‘immune deficiency’).

You can’t get an AIDS diagnosis unless you’re already HIV positive.

In the past most people with HIV would eventually be diagnosed with AIDS. Today due to the advancement of antiretroviral treatments few people develop AIDS related illnesses. Nowadays, doctors tend to you the term late stage or advance HIV.

There are a great deal of myths around HIV/AIDS and getting the right information can be incredibly important, I have listed below some trusted websites where you can find out more information and make contact with support services who will be able to help you.

If you are living with HIV or are the loved one, family member or friend of someone who has been diagnosed with HIV you may want to talk through how you are feeling and what you are experiencing. As a counsellor I can help you work through the difficulties you are experiencing.  I offer each client the opportunity to speak with me first in an initial phone call to ensure that I am the right person for you to work with on the difficulties you are experiencing and to answer any questions that you have. I am currently only offering support online or on the telephone. Please call me on 07843 813 537 or fill in the form on the Contact Page, if I doesn’t answer I am probably in a session, please leave me a message and I will call you back as soon as I can.
