Struggling with your sexuality

Struggling with your Sexuality? Counselling Support

Struggling with your Sexuality can be isolating and lonely. You might be experiencing feelings of depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. Having someone to speak to about how you are feeling, a safe, confidential space to explore and reflect on your sexuality can be hugely beneficial in helping you to come to a place of acceptance.

“Sexuality describes how you express yourself in a sexual way. Part of your sexuality is your sexual orientation, which refers to who you’re attract to, want to have sex with and fall in love with... ‘Sexuality’ is a holistic term for someone’s sexual behaviours, attractions, likes, dislikes, kinks and preferences.”

How do we express our sexuality?

Our sexuality is unique to us and can be fluid, so it can change and develop as we go through life and experience new things.

Our sexuality can be expressed through our emotional desires, our physical desires, our thoughts, fantasies and attitudes, our behaviours and relationships.

Our sexuality can also be influenced and shaped by our environment, our friends, our culture, our religion, how we feel about ourselves and our body and our personal values.

Exploring your sexuality with a partner is one way to discover what you like and dislike, but you don’t need to engage in sexual behaviour with someone else, you could explore it on your own through fantasy and masturbation.

What is Sexual Orientation?

“Sexual Orientation is how a person feels sexually about people of various genders”

We don’t have control over who we are attracted to, we might be attracted to someone of the same gender a different gender or we might not experience an attraction to anyone.

“Sexual activity is not necessarily representative of sexual orientation; people who have sexual relations with someone of the same gender may not identity as LGBT+.”
