EMDR Principles to help with Every Day Stress

EMDR Principles to help with Every Day Stress

EMDR Principles to help with Every Day Stress – EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing can be a powerful tool in helping a client deal with trauma and difficult experiences that they have been through.

When someone is engaged with EMDR in therapy they may be taught some of the following techniques to help them manage their stress and process difficult emotions. These techniques may prove helpful to anyone who is struggling, wanting to feel better and would like to try something on their own.

  • Grounding Techniques- these are methods to help someone stay present and connected to the here and now. Normally these techniques help you to move away from what is distressing you and bring your attention back to the here and now. One method is the 5-4-3-2-1 method. Where you name five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste. A more in-depth look at this method can be found here in Paul’s Counselling Directory profile. Managing Anxiety – 3 Quick Tips
  • Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Progressive muscle relaxation involves tensing and then slowly relaxing different muscle groups in the body. This technique can help release physical tension and promote relaxation. Start by tensing your muscles for a few seconds, then slowly release the tension while focusing on the sensations of relaxation. Further explanation of how to do this can be found in this article Very Well Mind – A Step by Step plan to Relax Your Body
  • Creative Expression: Engaging in creative activities such as drawing, painting, writing, or music to express emotions and explore inner experiences can provide a cathartic outlet for processing difficult emotions and promoting self-discovery. This activity can be especially insightful alongside attending therapy where you can explore the creative expression and what it is revealing about how you are feeling, what you are thinking and how you are changing.

Incorporating one or two of these EMDR principles into your daily life could be very beneficial to helping you stay grounded and emotionally resilient.
