Navigating Uncertainty: Taking Care of Ourselves in Difficult Times

Navigating Uncertainty: Taking Care of Ourselves in Difficult Times – uncertainty in the world and society has been a constant companion in our lives for a number of years now. From the COVID pandemic, to conflicts across the world, to the current situation in the USA, change and uncertainty has been pervasive in our news and social media. These more global affairs can also have a knock on effect on us individually, with job losses through the pandemic, shifts in politics and a rise in the cost of living. Additionally, we will also experience change, anxiety and uncertainty in the natural course of our lives as we simply go about our daily lives.

This uncertainty is exacerbated as we are now constantly connected to events through 24-hour news and social media, which can lead us to feeling  completely overwhelmed and powerless by what is happening in the world and in our lives. Below are some ideas on how you can manage this uncertainty, overwhelm and powerlessness.

Ways to Cope with Uncertainty

Everyone’s experience of uncertainty is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. However, here are some practical steps that may help you find balance during these challenging times:

1. Set Boundaries with News and Social Media
It’s natural to want to stay informed, but constant exposure to distressing news can heighten anxiety. Try to set limits on how much time you spend reading news updates or scrolling social media. Consider allocating a specific time of day to check in, and then step away.

2. Stick to Your Routine
When the world feels chaotic, maintaining your daily routine can provide a sense of stability. Engage in activities that absorb your attention—whether that’s exercise, reading, gardening, or creative hobbies. Fresh air, time with friends, or watching a favourite film can all offer valuable grounding.

3. Talk About How You’re Feeling
Don’t keep your worries bottled up. Share your thoughts with someone you trust—whether that’s a friend, family member, or therapist. You may also find it comforting to hear how others are coping. And if your anxiety feels overwhelming, seeking professional support can be incredibly beneficial.

4. Take Positive Action
It’s easy to feel helpless in the face of global events, but small actions can help restore a sense of agency. If you feel able, consider donating to charities or get involved with local community initiatives.
