Brought to you by the Marmalade Trust
This year’s theme: is all about reducing the stigma around this natural human emotion.
Loneliness Awareness Week is a national campaign led by the Marmalade Trust to highlight the issue of loneliness and encourage us all to build stronger more connected communities. This year Loneliness Awareness week takes place between 9-15 June – this year’s theme – reducing the stigma around this natural human emotion – invites us to destigmatise the feeling of loneliness and acknowledge that we can all feel lonely by offering or being involved in connection activities.
How You Can Get Involved
The Marmalade Trust website is full of inspiration. You’ll find:
- A map of local events happening near you
- Creative ways to take part—whether on your own, at work, or with a group
Here are a few more ideas to get you started:
- Go for a walk – smile or chat to someone new
- Smile at someone you don’t know
- Offer to buy a coffee for a colleague or stranger
- Call or message a friend or family member you haven’t spoken to in a while
- Help a neighbour with a small task
- Volunteer your time to a local cause
- Join a community group or club
- Learn an instrument or join a choir
If you are worried or anxious about making new connections, start small and build up your confidence.
Why This Matters
Loneliness is more than just a fleeting feeling—it can have a serious impact on our mental and physical health. According to the Marmalade Trust:
- Chronic loneliness increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, depression, and cognitive decline
- It’s associated with poor sleep and early mortality
- The health impact is comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day
- Those who feel lonely are more than twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia
