3 Tips for Managing your Workload – at this time of year we can all feel overwhelmed and that there is too much to do. Christmas holidays are coming up, we are making arrangements to be with family, we want to go shopping and do nice things, and all of this has to be managed against the backdrop of the pandemic and the continuance of every day life, we still have to manage our work and our home responsibilities. Below are 3 tips to help you manage your workload and ensure that you still have time for what you enjoy.
- Make a list
- List all the tasks that you need to do
- Prioritise the list with the most important things at the top.
- Decide if there are any things that you can delegate to someone else, or that you can pay someone else to do for you. Are there any tasks you can do in a different way that would free up time for you. Eg. Do your shopping or Christmas Shopping online rather than going to the shops.
- Looking down your list, are there any tasks that you can ditch completely, that actually you don’t need to do at all, perhaps you feel that you have to go to an event that you actually don’t want to go to. Or are there any tasks that you could delay and put on a separate list to be dealt with next year.
- Identify tasks that can be completed quickly and easily and do them first. We all feel better when we have accomplished something.
- Then schedule time to do the remaining tasks.
2. Only work for blocks of 90 minutes.
Focus on your task or job for up to 90 minutes and then take a break and do something completely different for a short while. Make sure you have a lunch break and keep to boundaries about finishing work on time.
- Decide what enjoyable things that you want to do either on your own or with family or friends. Write down your list of ideas and then schedule them into your diary. These events should be followed through with as much as possible. Sometimes when work and home life can bleed into one another it can be hard to find the balance and sometimes we need to set intentional and if needed formal boundaries with ourselves and our work to make sure that we play as much as we work.
