World Suicide Prevention Day 10 September

World Suicide Awareness Day is on 10 September. It is an opportunity for communities and organisations to raise awareness of how we can support people so that fewer people die by suicide. The theme for this year’s suicide awareness day is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”.

The aim of the theme is to raise awareness about the importance of changing the narrative surrounding suicide and transforming how we perceive this complex issue. Changing the narrative requires systemic change. It’s about shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support.

According to the World Health Organisation more than 700,000 people die by suicide every year. For every suicide there are many more people who attempt suicide. In 15-29 year olds suicide is the fourth leading cause of death.

Suicide profoundly impacts, families, communities and societies. Being involved in World Suicide prevention day is a step towards reducing the stigma around suicide and changing the narrative, so that we are more likely to offer help to someone struggling or ask for help if we are struggling.

The Samaritans have a great deal of useful information on their website about how to support someone who is feeling suicidal. They are a great resource please visit their website for more information.

This is also a pdf of little tips that the Samaritans have put together that you might find useful.
