Stoptober 2024
Stoptober 2024 is a UK campaign that encourages smokers to quit smoking for the whole month of October. The campaign is run by Public Health England and the idea behind it is that if you can stop smoking for 28 days you are five times more likely to stop for good.
Stopping smoking can dramatically improve your health and wellbeing. It affects nearly every organ in your body and can lead to heart disease, stoked, lung disease and many kinds of cancer. It is one of the leading causes of preventable death and disease.
If you stop smoking your body will begin almost straight away. The graphic below demonstrates what will happen.
There are many benefits to stopping smoking
- Financial – you will save a lot of money that you could use elsewhere.
- Better mental health and quality of life
- Your sense of taste and smell will improve
- Decreased anxiety, stress and depression
- Increase in positive mood and quality of life
- Being able to breath more easily
- More energy
- Better circulation which makes exercise easier
How to get involved with Stoptober.
- Cut down over time. – If quitting smoking all in one go is too much consider reduction. Portion out your cigarettes so that you have them over a longer period of time. If you smoke a packet a day make it last two days and then three days. Quitting will be less of a shock to the system.
- Don’t be discouraged by relapses – whenever we are trying to stop a habit lapses are inevitable. What is important is not letting these lapses spiral into a complete relapse. It is important to return to your habit of not smoking as quickly as possible.
- Have a plan for the money you save – we all know that cigarettes are expensive. Save the money you would have spent on cigarettes and have a plan for what you will spend it on, something that you will enjoy and remember.
If stopping on the 1 October for 28 days is too much make Stoptober work for you and what you can manage. Use it as a starting point for quitting smoking and don’t set yourself up for failure by trying to do too much before you are ready.
